Overview

Like so many wonderful rural railway lines across the country, the East Lancashire Railway looked set to be consigned to history when the route was axed in the 1970s. However, the Manchester/ Bolton line linked to Radcliffe, which had been in use since 1846, was saved by the East Lancashire Preservation Society and now passengers can enjoy a blast of nostalgia as steam trains whistle through the stunning Irwell valley. Stopping at Heywood, Bury, Summerseat, Burrs Copuntry Park, Ramsbottom, Rawtenstall and Irwell Vale, the scope for walking, pottering around little shops and discovering some fabulous traditional pubs is huge – in fact, the railway offers its Rail Ale Trail guiding you to some of the great watering holes in the area. The East Lancashire Railway continues to develop, hosting a series of special events throughout the year. Throughout the year there are steam and diesel galas featuring restored locomotives, Halloween Ghost Trains, Days Out With Thomas, Sci - Fi on the Sidings and the very popular Santa Specials.
